Hotels came along first as just a place to stay, like on a vacation or something. With the building of Rout 66, a new 'hotel' came along called a Motel, or as they used to be called Motor Lodge. They were usually on the side of the road and offered parking right in front of your door. It was no frills, strictly a parking spot and a room with a small bathroom and a bed. Hotels are much more inclusive, usually having a pool, restaurant and the front door was INSIDE the building.





However, today the words are pretty much interchangeable.
hotels offer amenities such as restaurants, swimming pools, shops, etc....


a motel is for overnight,and lacks a lot of the stuff hotels have to offer....
A hotel you take the wife and kids on holiday. A motel you take your mistress.
