What's the difference between a motel and a hotel?

A motel is usually an inn where you usually stay for the night. They are on the road, usually off of highway exits. According to my father, ';motel'; is a word combination of thre words motor and hotel. Also according to my father, the motel was invented after the invention of the car, solely for the purpose that they are now used for.

Hotels are usually in big cities. They are meant to fit more people, and are meant for longer stays. That is why they are in bigger cities, like Chicago and New York City, which are sight-seeing cities. They were meant for people to have longer stays. That is why they are sometimes fancier.

Also, might I add that since motels are normally used for overnight stays, they aren't as well-kept, because they don't need to be. Hotels, for two reasons, are fancier, and more taken-care of than motels. One reason is that people stay there for longer periods of time, and if you're in a dirtier, creepier place, it would be uncomfortable. Also, hotels make more money to pay for maids and maintenace, for more people stay there for longer periods of time. What's the difference between a motel and a hotel?
The motel concept originated with the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo, constructed in 1925 by Arthur Heineman. In conceiving of a name for his hotel Heineman abbreviated motor hotel to mo-tel

Motels differ from hotels in their common location along highways, as opposed to the urban cores favored by hotels, and their orientation to the outside (in contrast to hotels whose doors typically face an interior hallway). Motels almost by definition include a parking lot, while older hotels were not built with automobile parking in mind. What's the difference between a motel and a hotel?
hotel rooms generally open into an interior hallway...motel rooms open to the outside...there may be some exceptions but this is the major difference...
