What is the difference between hotels and motels?

I have been wondering about this for a while.


Are there any differences or are they simply the names that they choose?

Umm, hotels have hallways and elevators on the inside to help you to your room, but motels have stairs and sidewalks on the outside. And I'm not sure about Inns, but I guess they have both... I don't know.

Hotels have a lobby and you enter your room from hallways. You understand what I'm saying? It's hard to explain.
hotel as a noun, is a building where meals and rooms are provided for travellers. motel is a hotel designed for the convenience of travellers with motor cars.
for me, in motels people go there for like a night and go on the other hand, in hotels u stay there for days. motels are cheaper than hotels.
motels are usually smaller and hotels are relaxing and are usually in big buildings

Motels are ';motor hotels';. Which means you drive up to the door of your room. Hotels usually involve getting out of your car and going to your room through a lobby and hallway!!!!
well what ive always thought is that a hotel is more expensive and nicer and that a motel its cheaper and not as nice but i might be wrong
In a hotel the doors open from a hall way and in a motel the doors open from the outside.
A motel has the door to ur room on the outside and hotels u have to walk inside to get to the door of ur room...
I'm gonna agree with baby d, Hotels are higher class and Motels are hole in the wall places to sleep or do the dirty
one is spelled w/ a 'h' and one is spelled w/ a 'm'
