Hotels are at least halfway decent, while a motel is usually run down, not the high cleaning rate of a hotel either.
Hotels are (in this case) facing the beach, right upon the beach, while a motel is usually a ways away and will most likely face the parking lot.

the real reason is that motels are a series of connected rooms in a single building that faces the parking lot or a common area.
a hotels are temporary places to stay that supply you with accomodations including a bed, phone, television, etc. They don't face a common area or parking lot such as motels do
Motel comes from ';Motor Hotel'; Generally hotels were in cities. When Americans became more mobile and Interstates were built, Motor Hotels began to be built along our highways. The term was shortened to Motel.
