What is the difference between a motel and a hotel?

I am very confused because they seem the same to me... It's been bothering me my whole life. What is the difference between a motel and a hotel?
Well Tori...

The lines between these two entities have been blurred somewhat in the last few years... But, normally, a hotel is a bit more developed and offers a wider range of services to its guests.

Motels were developed as a convenience for travelers on roadways and were made far more available (at roadside) to the general traveling public.... Motels..being Hotels... for the --mo--toring public....

Within recent years, however... a good number of Motels have began offering numerous add-on services that rival some of the better hotels.. and.. there are a number of businesses that call themselves hotels that offer far less than one would ever think....
