A motel is more for short term stays and traveling motorists. You access the room from the parking lot.





Hotels are more equipped for long term stays. They often have conference rooms and you have access to your room from inside the building.

The term motel comes from ';motor hotel,'; from the days when driving and sitting in your car for everything was fun, new, and chic. (Drive-in movies, drive-in diners, etc.)





The idea is that you have a room like you do at a hotel, but you drive up to it. It doesn't have a lobby, at least, not in the way a hotel does. Doesn't always have the same amenities and facilities as a hotel.
Probably not much anymore. A Motel is an abbreviation for ';motor hotel.'; It usually has more parking than a hotel and near a main highway. The word came about I think after the interstates were created and it became a term for cheap hotels placed adjacent to main highways for overnight travellers looking to stop during their journey rather than being the final destination.
