What is the difference between motel and hotel?

aren't they the same? What is the difference between motel and hotel?
A motel is usually smaller and cheaper, and a hotel is usually bigger and more expensive. What is the difference between motel and hotel?
Yes and No. A motel is actually a hotel geared toward motorists. They became very popular during the 50s and 60s when families started going on road trips. Motels are built outwards, so that you pull up your car right in front of your door, where as with hotels you have to go inside and through lobby's, etc... They are the same in the idea that you pay to stay the night in a bed. Motels tend to be cheaper in price and quality, but not always the case. The terms are not used so religiously today.
A motel is usually cheaper and not as extravegant.
