What is the difference beetween a motel and hotel?

A hotel is usually one large building with some parking available. A motel is usually a lower rise building or several unite connected together with parking for all rooms. The original motels were called motor hotels and gradually became called motels..What is the difference beetween a motel and hotel?
Actually the difference is a hotel has the room doors on the outside of the building, which is the ';mo'; part. You can drive you ';motor'; up to or very close to the door. A hotel has traditional hallways and when you exit your room you are still indoors. This is in our flight attendant union contract at my airline. It actually states the difference and why we can only be put up by the company in a hotel. It makes it more difficult for unsavory characters to access us. It is also quieter, since our stay in the hotel is considered a working overnight. What is the difference beetween a motel and hotel?
One has ';M'; at the beginning, the other has ';H';. :)~
