hotels serve a different purpose than motel and as such they are located in or near cities the basic design of a motel differs significantly from hotels where rooms face in ward with doors opening to interior hallways hotels commonly offer Jacuzzis ,gums, poor, restaurants, internet, cable ,everything for play and sleeping

motel a type of hotel in which parking is provided at or near the room and the room door gives out onto the parking lot
You usually park your car next to your room at a motel. Motels normally have a diner where you can eat; they do not provide room service. You access your room from the outside. They are usually cheaper than a hotel.

When you stay at a hotel you normally park in a parking lot or they have a garage to park in. You access your room from inside the building. Rooms normally cost more than motels and some are darn high in cost. They provide room service and usually have at least one restaurant, not diner, where you can eat. Some hotels have several restaurants. In the finer hotels you will get your shoes shined overnight if you put them outside your door or whatever arrangement they have. Some hotels also have shops within them and you can make travel arrangements. The more you pay for a room the more amenities they have. There are probably some more differences but off the top of my head I can't think of any.
A hotel is an establishment that provides lodging and usually meals and other services for travelers and other paying guests.

A motel is an establishment that provides lodging for motorists in rooms usually having direct access to an open parking area. Also called motor court, motor lodge.
Originally, I think a Motel was called that because it was like a motor hotel, that you drove your car right up to your motel room door.

Hotels were a large, several story building.

However, now Motel chains have pretty much turned into to the same things as a hotel.
Hotels are meant to be more inviting and remind or ';feel'; like home, hence ';Hotel';; whereas, motels are meant for people who are ';motoring'; from place to place and don't have time to enjoy the whole ';Hotel'; experience, hence ';Motel';.
