A hotel has room doors that open into an interior hallway. A motel has room doors that open onto an exterior sidewalk. In the old days, motels were typically less expensive than hotels but this is not necessarily the case today. What is the diffrence between a Hotel and a Motel?
A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. The provision of basic accommodation, in times past, consisting only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control. Additional common features found in hotel rooms are a telephone, an alarm clock, a television, and Internet connectivity; snack foods and drinks may be supplied in a mini-bar, and facilities for making hot drinks. Larger hotels may provide a number of additional guest facilities such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare, and have conference and social function services.
Entering dictionaries after World War II, the word motel, an abbreviation of motor and hotel or motorists' hotel, referred initially to a type of hotel in the form of a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot and, in some circumstances, a common area; or a series of small cabins with common parking. As the United States highway system began to develop in the 1920s, long distance road journeys became more common and the need for inexpensive, easily accessible overnight accommodation sited close to the main routes, led to the growth of the motel concept. What is the diffrence between a Hotel and a Motel?
When you can back your car up to your room door, you are in a Motel.
Typically, there are no/minimal accommodations at a Motel. If you are real lucky, there is a laundry room. If you have more than that, most likely you are in a Hotel.
A hotel is at your destination and generally has interior corridors and a restaurant.
A motel (or a motor hotel) is along a highway, generally has exterior corridors, and generally don't have a restaurant.
I believe that the two terms refer to the quality of the places. A hotel is usually has better quality than motel. For example, Motel 8's quality is a lot lower than the Marriott.
Motels have the hallways on the outside of the building. Hotels are generally nicer and more expensive. Motels are known for their nasty rooms and high crime rates.
Motels are USUALLY cheaper/ not as nice as hotels
