Whats the difference in a hotel and motel?

I thought it was that hotels were indoors, meaning you walk into a lobby and go to your room.....a motel the door to your room is outside.

I've seen two-story motels....it's just that their doors are on the exterior.Whats the difference in a hotel and motel?
Letter H and the Letter M.

Seriously I think the Hotel would have the swimming pool vs the Motel.

Motel pop machine is outside, Hotel pop machine inside with better room service.

Motel Mom and Pops ownership, not dressed to fancey. Hotel staff wears hotel suits, more dressier.

Motel cheaper, Hotel more expensive.

Motel public phone outside parking lot, Hotel individual phones in each room.

Motel maybe a TV, maybe no TV. Hotel definitely a TV in the room.

More Hotels on the AAA travel list than Motels. More motels on Route 66.Whats the difference in a hotel and motel?
A hotel has multiple floors and a motel is one level.
Its all about quality. a hotel would have better, cleaner and higher prices then a motel, while a motel would be something cheaper, but they offer better accomodations so that people will choose them over a hotel (ex. breakfast, shuttle, etc) not all motels do this and only a few hotels do this because many hotels are usually offered to the wealthy majority that could pay 400 too 3000 a night, so they have restaurants, and the hotel is usually more comforting. moral of this story is if your on a budget stick to a motel, if you dont care go big and go to a hotel.
