Motels are usually for one night only. Started as stopovers to sleep while on the road. Hence the ';mo'; for motoring. Hotels are places to stay when visiting another town for a meeting or such. They offer conveniences that feel like home. Hence th';ho'; for home.

Supposedly, a motel is one that you can drive up to the door for your room- the rooms open to the outside of the building. In hotels, the rooms open up into the building, to a hallway, etc.
Motels are usually cheaper, and have less to offer in the rooms. Such as, they might not have a pool, a mini fridge, or microwave. Hotels are a little more expensive but have better quality to offer!
