What's the differnece between a Motel and a Hotel?

Okay, I know this is a stupid question, but I bet my cousin 20$ that there's no difference!!!! :SWhat's the differnece between a Motel and a Hotel?
Although they serve the same functions, there is a difference..

Motel's generally are open air type of hotel where you can park next to or in front of the rooms, the name comes from a combination of ';Motor'; as in car and ';Hotel';. The old name for Motels were Motor lodges. Motels also generally have less services available for their guests than hotels. For the most part they were just meant for people who were driving to a location had simply needed a room for a night.

Hotels are usually larger, have more services and the lobby and parking lot were more often times separate from the room areas. What's the differnece between a Motel and a Hotel?
Motels are usually side of the road, efficiency type accommodations for motorists.

moè·¯tel :

a hotel providing travelers with lodging and free parking facilities, typically a roadside hotel having rooms adjacent to an outside parking area or an urban hotel offering parking within the building.

ho-tel:

a commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and sometimes to permanent residents, and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public.
The difference between a hotel and motel was simply that a guest can enter the room of a motel from the parking lot whereas a guest of a hotel must enter the room from an indoor corridor.
Whip me beat me call me stupid, but I thought a Motel was where you could park your car out the front of your unit/area, and a hotel was the high rise, no car space little box in the sky. Motels, I think usually have some sort of mini kitchen/food prep area. Hotels don't.
As far as I know, in a Motel the doors are accessible from the outdoors, while you can only enter a hotel room from the inside of the building.
I was told a MOTEL is a place that you can pay for a room by a weekly or even monthly amount, like an apartment.

a hotel is just for a few nights.
A hotel offers lodging food beer entertainment (Dancers) but have no obligation to provide parking.

A motel must have parking and lodging.

Motel originated from Motor hotel--Motel

Sorry about your $20
A motel is a hotel which is made convenient for people who wish to be able to have quick access from their parked car to a hotel room

hotels are bigger. provide more services than motel such as alarm clocks, TV ...etc.
A Motel is on the Cheap side. Hotels are higher in prices. Other than that, there is no difference.
my parents always told me

motels dont give food (from the motel)
